Foot-and-mouth control zones lifted

12 April 2012

Two temporary control zones set up around farms outside Surrey over fears of foot-and-mouth have been lifted after animals tested negative for the disease, Defra said.

Initial results on Monday found livestock on a premises near Rogate, West Sussex, did not have foot-and-mouth and the control zone has now been removed.

A second temporary control zone established in Hampshire has also been lifted following negative tests for the virus, Defra said.

The all-clear means the disease has not spread outside Surrey since the outbreak began in August.

Although a seventh case of foot-and-mouth disease was confirmed on Monday night, it is within the existing Egham Protection Zone in Surrey.

The good news for British farmers, who are facing the twin threats of foot-and-mouth and bluetongue, comes just hours before the relaxation on the movement of livestock in low risk areas of the country.

The risk of foot-and-mouth spreading in Wales, Scotland and much of England is now considered low and from 3.30pm today, some restrictions will be relaxed, allowing farm-to-farm movements. Chief vet Debby Reynolds said: "Our aim is to get farming back to normal when the risk is acceptable to do so."

Restrictions will remain in the risk area which comprises the counties of Buckinghamshire, Oxfordshire, Hertfordshire, Essex, Berkshire, Greater London, Surrey, Kent, Hampshire, West Sussex and East Sussex.
