The full reopening of London’s “world class” arts and heritage sector was hailed on Monday, although some theatres said they would not operate at 100 per cent capacity for the “audience’s peace of mind”.

The lifting of restrictions, which also cover comedy clubs and music venues, means some shows such as Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Cinderella will open to packed houses.

Culture Secretary Oliver Dowden said: “It’s wonderful to see London’s world-class culture and heritage attractions reopen fully today thanks to our extraordinary progress with vaccines and the whole country’s efforts throughout the pandemic. These attractions are ready to welcome people back safely now restrictions are lifted, so I encourage everyone to get back to enjoying them responsibly.”

One of the highlights of the summer will be Cinderella, which has its world premiere at the Gillian Lynne Theatre on Tuesday. But other shows are taking a more staggered approach with Anna X, starring The Crown actress Emma Corrin, saying it would not jump to 100 per cent admission immediately.

A spokeswoman said: “Whilst we are legally able to increase to full capacity for Anna X, and there is certainly the demand for it, for the peace of mind of our audiences we have taken the decision not to increase to 100 per cent capacity.”

She said capacity will be “gradually increased” with seats bookable in bubbles.
