An eight-year-old British girl drowned in the Canary Islands, said the Foreign Office.
The tragedy happened on the holiday island of Lanzarote earlier.
A Foreign Office spokesman said: "We can confirm that an eight-year-old girl died in Lanzarote.
"We are providing full consular assistance."
The spokesman said no further information was available about the incident or the dead girl's family at this stage.
