More than half of people in their 20s have hosted a festive celebration for their closest friends, according to research.

A new survey showed 56 per cent of young people have hosted such a celebration, dubbed “Friendsmas,” during December, with the event being a similar affair to Christmas Day with a festive dinner, cocktails and gifts.

In the survey, by clothing brand Jack Wills, 64 per cent said they liked to host an occasion as their friends were like a second family.

Additionally, 59 per cent of the 1,000 people polled – all aged between 23 and 30 - dress up for friends’ Christmas celebrations, while nearly 80 per cent will spend up to £100 on each friend’s present.

Following the research, Jack Wills has declared Saturday 17 December to be Friendsmas Day 2016.

Founder Peter Williams said: “With many of our customers living away from family for the first time with friends, we see new traditions evolving around Christmas.”
