Holiday flight in emergency landing

12 April 2012

A flight carrying holidaymakers from the UK to Cyprus was forced to make an emergency landing after reports of a "haze" in the cabin.

The Thomson flight from Newcastle to Larnaca "landed safely" at Stansted Airport in Essex at 9.35am on Sunday morning, a spokeswoman for the airline said.

All 154 passengers and seven crew on board used the aircraft's emergency slides to evacuate the plane, she added.

Ambulance and fire crews were called as a precaution but no-one was hurt apart from a "couple" of passengers who received "friction burns" from using the slides.

The spokeswoman said: "Flight TOM 2807 from Newcastle to Larnaca diverted to Stansted due to a haze in the cabin. The flight landed at 9.35am and the captain made the decision to carry out an emergency evacuation. The shoots were deployed and all the passengers exited the aircraft safely."

She said the airline was currently investigating why there was a "haze" in the cabin but she added that no-one had suffered any ill effects while on board.

A new plane was being prepared to take the passengers on to Cyprus.

However, two people have decided not to continue with their trip following the incident.

The Boeing 757-200 that made the emergency landing was still being examined by investigators, she added.

A spokesman for Stansted Airport confirmed that the emergency landing had gone smoothly. He added that the general running of the airport had not been affected by the incident and flights were still departing as normal.
