Irreverent poem for Bird gun victim

Kenneth Fishburn will be laid to rest
12 April 2012

Mourners at the funeral of Derrick Bird's victim Susan Hughes both laughed and cried at an irreverent poem read out at her service.

The mother of two would be looking down from heaven thinking it was all nonsense, they were told.

Ms Hughes 57, was murdered as she walked home with her shopping in Egremont.

Bird, a self employed cabbie, went on to shoot dead a total of 12 innocent victims on June 2 before committing suicide in the tranquil hamlet of Boot.

The poem was read from Ms Hughes's perspective to the hundreds of mourners during her funeral at St Mary and St Michael's church in Egremont.

Archdeacon, the Ven Richard Pratt, said the poem was written by a family friend "as if Susan was sitting on a cloud and what she would think of what's going on".

A crowd of mourners clutching red, turquoise and white balloons gathered in preparation for the hearse's arrival on Thursday morning.

As Ms Hughes's coffin was carried to the church the 50-odd balloons were released. Organisers said they represented love, peace and the victim's birthstone, turquoise.

Another victim Kenneth Fishburn, 71, will be remembered by friends and family during a funeral service at Distington Crematorium on Thursday afternoon.

The retired Sellafield security worker and former soldier was shot near his home in Egremont.
