Jamie Carragher suspended as Sky Sports pundit for rest of the season after he admitted spitting on family in car

Former Liverpool footballer Jamie Carragher has been suspended as a football analyst for Sky Sports until the end of the season.

It comes after he admitted spitting at a family in a car following Liverpool's defeat to Manchester United on Saturday.

Sky said in a statement: “Following an internal review, Sky has suspended Jamie Carragher for the remainder of the football season.

"Jamie has taken full responsibility for what has happened and we will ensure he gets the help he needs to guarantee something like this never happens again.

"Before the start of the next season we will sit down with Jamie to discuss whether he is ready to return to his role."

Over the weekend a video emerged of Carragher firing a volley of spit at an adjacent car as he drove alongside it.

He was being hounded by a motorist after Liverpool lost 2-1 to Manchester United when he says he "lost it".

The driver claims Carragher's spit hit his the 14-year-old daughter.

The former England international issued a grovelling apology on TV saying there was "no excuse" for his behaviour, adding spitting is for "the lowest of the low".

Explaining his actions, he said it was "a moment of madness" that was "difficult" for him to explain.

"It feels like an out of body thing. That moment of madness for four or five seconds," Carragher said.

"No matter what the circumstances for anyone you can't behave like that, it's unacceptable."

Fellow Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville has been among those to defend him.

He said his colleague had "overstepped the mark" but that he believed the incident was "isolated".

He wrote in a tweet: "No excuses he’s made a big mistake. He’s massively passionate about football and he’s overstepped the mark and shouldn’t have reacted.

“I’ve been on TV for 3 years with him and imo this isolated incident shouldn’t stop us working together.”
