Lamont seeks more from Cameron

12 April 2012

David Cameron has been urged to flesh out his policies by former Conservative chancellor Lord Lamont.

The Tory leader, who served his political apprenticeship as special adviser to the then chancellor, was warned that he needs "more policies, more quickly".

Speaking to the ePolitix.com website, Lord Lamont described Mr Cameron as a "thoughtful, clever person" and a "charismatic leader".

He said he also believes his one-time protege - who appeared alongside Mr Lamont in Downing Street on Black Wednesday - to be "strongly eurosceptic".

Lord Lamont said: "I think it's wise to take your time on policy - you don't want to come out too early with your detailed ideas because they are liable to get lifted by the opposition.

"Having said that, I accept the point that he has got to develop more policy content.

"He is a charismatic leader, he has done well in making the Conservative Party more voter-friendly, but I think we do need more policies, more quickly."

Mr Cameron has faced criticism since his election in December that he is short of concrete policies. Earlier this month, he was forced to beef up his "mission statement" after activists complained that it lacked substance.

Lord Lamont added: "He is going to have to come forward with some policies on law and order, to deal with the high level of taxation and I don't believe immigration can be off the agenda.

"The smaller state is at the heart of Conservatism and I think ideas have to be developed around that concept."
