Cornwall Council has officially added an apostrophe to Land’s End.

The issue has always been a grey area, to the extent some Land’s End road signs have an apostrophe while others don’t.

But the county council has finally put the issue to bed, after taking an official vote on whether to add the punctuation mark.

It was rubber-stamped during a debate about local government electoral boundaries, which will see Cornwall Council's area of authority slimmed down.

An exasperated Cllr Sue James told Tuesday’s meeting: “I can’t believe I’m standing up to have this conversation."

She continued: “There is a whole debate about apostrophe or not apostrophe.

“I’ve gone to a man who I think most would say is knowledgeable about this matter, Craig Weatherhill, an archaeologist and historian who’s written a book on Cornish names. He has come back and told me it needs ‘apostrophe s’.

“It is a debatable one but it’s just trying to get it right, and I’m going with Craig.”

The apostrophe was unanimously approved by the council.
