Lorry redesign to remove cycle crash blind spot

Cycle death: The woman's mangled bicycle at the scene
15 April 2013

A major advance in making roads safer for cyclists and pedestrians was announced today.

Lorries will be redesigned to eliminate the driver’s “blind spot” responsible for countless deaths.

At least 28 London cyclists have been killed in collisions with lorries in the last four years, including polar scientist Dr Katharine Giles last week in Victoria Street.

The move, from the European Commission, is predicted to cut road deaths by 10 per cent across the EU — saving 300 to 500 cyclists and pedestrians a year. It will allow the length of lorries to be extended beyond 61 feet. More rounded cabs will increase the field of vision and allow glass doors to be fitted.

The driver’s seat can be moved to the centre and surrounded with screens displaying 360-degree images.
