Man accused of abducting girl, 15

12 April 2012

A lorry driver has been remanded in custody after being accused of abducting a 15-year-old girl.

Robert Williams, 49, of Glebe Road, Whitburn, Scotland, appeared at Grimsby Magistrates' Court accused of abducting 15-year-old Laura Stainforth.

She went missing from home in Cleethorpes, North East Lincolnshire, on January 14 and later turned up in France.

Williams, who declined to enter a plea, was remanded in custody to appear at the same court on February 18.

Williams spoke only to confirm his name, date of birth and address as well as to indicate he did not want to enter a plea to the single charge at this stage.

Williams was arrested in the Lille area of France on January 21 - a week after Laura went missing from her home.

There was no application for bail and chairman of the bench, Carl Thomas, told Williams the case was too serious to be dealt with by the magistrates' court.

The court heard the offence carries a maximum sentence of seven years in prison.

Mr Thomas told the defendant the case would be dealt with by the crown court, but said he would next appear by videolink to the magistrates' court on February 18.

He said the committal hearing, also at Grimsby Magistrates' Court, would take place on March 12.
