A man was due to appear in court charged with the murder of a 62-year-old disabled man who was beaten to death in his home.

Alan Atkin, who used a wheelchair, was found dead in his flat on Swan Hill Road, Scarborough, on Wednesday afternoon.

A 28-year-old man was charged with his murder on Monday night, a spokesman for North Yorkshire Police said.

Mr Atkin's body was discovered by two female friends at about 3.15pm.

He had suffered severe injuries to his face, head and body and a post-mortem examination revealed the cause of death was due to the head injuries.

The defendant - who has not been named by police - will appear at Scarborough Magistrates Court.
