Man killed in supermarket shooting

12 April 2012

A man has been shot dead in front of horrified shoppers in a busy supermarket car park.

The victim was gunned down in an apparent gangland hit outside the Asda store in Robroyston, Glasgow.

He was named locally as Kevin Carroll, who is said to have links with the city's criminal underworld and survived an attempt on his life three years ago.

Shocked witnesses, who were in the supermarket at the time of the shooting, said they heard several loud bangs.

Shoppers were prevented from leaving the store until they could be questioned by police. And cars had to queue to get out of the car park as officers stopped vehicles to speak to their occupants.

A team of eight forensic officers examined a black Audi car in the car park, thought to have belonged to the victim. A white tent was later erected around the car.

Mr Carroll survived a double shooting in East Dunbartonshire in November 2006 when shots were fired at him and a friend from a car. On that occasion, he was taken to hospital with stomach wounds while the other man suffered leg injuries.

Strathclyde Police said the victim was the intended target of the shooting, and no-one else was injured.

A spokesman said the attackers - three men wearing masks - fled the scene in a dark-coloured car.

Detective Superintendent Michael Orr said: "I would like to reassure members of the public that a high police presence will be maintained in the area and extra resources will be deployed to trace the suspects."
