A former pest controller is due before a judge later this week accused of murdering an 83-year-old retired Army officer shot dead in a village six years ago.

Christopher Docherty-Puncheon, 31, of Stocking Pelham, Hertfordshire, is scheduled to appear at St Albans Crown Court on Thursday accused of killing Lieutenant Colonel Riley Workman in Furneux Pelham in January 2004.

Docherty-Puncheon, who used to be called Christopher Nudds, appeared via a video link before magistrates in Stevenage.

He was remanded in custody and spoke only to confirm personal details during a brief hearing.

Police said Lt Col Workman was shot in the chest as he answered the door of his home in Furneux Pelham at about 8pm on January 7 2004.

His death sparked a major investigation.

Lt Col Workman had served in the Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Regiment and then the Royal Green Jackets before retiring in 1965. He lived alone.
