A 23-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the Manchester bomb attack, police have said.

Twenty-two people were killed and 59 injured after a suspected suicide bomber detonated an explosive after a pop concert at the Manchester Arena.

Greater Manchester Police said the man believed to have carried out the explosion died at the scene.

But a second male was arrested on Tuesday morning in south Manchester.

The force tweeted: "With regards to last night's incident at the Manchester arena, we can confirm we have arrested a 23-year-old man in South Manchester."

Police said they believe they know the identity of the bomber and are working to establish whether he was operating alone or as part of a wider network.

Nick Yates, 27, a graphic designer from Manchester, said he was leaving the Morrison's shopping centre in Chorlton when he saw the police.

"There was a black Mercedes van pulled up on the side of the road with six to eight police officers, all in plain clothes but wearing black caps with checkerboard marking," Mr Yates said.

"Then as I crossed the road I saw a guy in handcuffs, sat on the floor against the wall."

After a minute or two a marked police van arrived at the scene on Wilbraham Road, said Mr Yates, at which point he left.

"I didn't get the impression that he looked overly concerned," he said of the handcuffed man.

"I think he was an Asian guy but I couldn't be sure, and he looked quite young."

The city's Arndale shopping centre was evacuated just after 11am, sparking fears of a second terror scare.

Police said a man was arrested at the scene but it was not connected to Monday night's incident.

The explosion took place just minutes after the end of an Ariana Grande pop concert - which was attended by 21,000 people.

Fans ran screaming out of the building and reported seeing bodies strewn across the concert hall.

In a press conference on Tuesday morning, police confirmed many of those injured are children.

Speaking after chairing an emregency Cobra meeting, the Prime Minister said the "callous" attack was "among the worst terrorism we have experienced in the United Kingdom".

A vigil will be held at 6pm on Tuesday in Albert Square, Manchester.
