Minute's silence to mark Grenfell Tower anniversary: What you need to know as UK remembers the victims of the fire

Fiona Simpson14 June 2018

The UK will today fall silent to remember the 72 people killed in the Grenfell Tower fire one year on from the devastating blaze.

Just before 1am on June 14 last year flames ripped through the west London tower block killing 71 people including a stillborn baby.

Maria del Pilar Burton, 74, died in hospital in January from injuries sustained in the blaze.

At 12 noon people across the UK will observe one minute’s silence to pay tribute to the victims of the fire.

In the heart of the Grenfell community in north Kensington a series of events are taking place to mark the anniversary of the tragedy.

A 72 second silence will take place at a memorial service at St Helen’s Church in the shadow of the building from 11am.

Seventy three doves will be released to commemorate each victim and anyone unaccounted for.

The tower and other London landmarks have been lit up green to mark the anniversary of the inferno.
