British Airways is transferring more flights into Heathrow's Terminal 5 (T5) in a move expected to be free of the chaotic scenes that marred the opening of the £4.3 billion facility in March.
The T5 opening saw flights cancelled, bags going astray and long queues. It brought down heaps of criticism on the heads of BA and Heathrow operator BAA.
The shambles led BA to scrap plans to bring all its remaining long-haul flights from Heathrow's Terminal 4 to T5 at the end of April.
Instead, BA opted for a phased transfer, with the first batch of flights being moved in June, the second lot being transferred today and the remainder moving next month.
After its initial traumas, when just about everything that could go wrong did so, T5 is now working well.
A BA spokesman said: "Since opening T5, we have looked after more than 8.5 million customers and handled more than 65,000 flights through the facilities.
"In June, when we last increased the number of long-haul flights, our operations went extremely well and since that time customer feedback about the terminal has been very positive.
"Even with the increased number of flights on Wednesday, we expect a few less customers that day than we have regularly handled in T5 over the busy summer period."
He went on: "Along with BAA, we have put a lot of work into making the move of these additional long-haul flights from T4 into T5 as smooth as possible.
"T5 has been working well throughout the busy summer period and we now have almost six months' experience of working in the terminal under 'live' conditions."
