M-way speeding earns ban for Khan

12 April 2012

Boxer Amir Khan has been fined £1,000 and banned from driving for 42 days after a court heard evidence that he drove at speeds of up to 140mph on a motorway.

The Commonwealth lightweight title-holder broke the speed limit while behind the wheel of his BMW 6 series convertible on New Year's Eve 2006.

A police officer told Rochdale Magistrates' Court that his speedometer was "off the clock" at 155mph as he pursued him on the M62.

Sentencing Khan, 21, of Bolton, District Judge Pamela Baldwin said there was not enough evidence to prove he was driving at more than 100mph but she was satisfied that it was in excess of 70mph.

Khan had denied the charge but during his trial admitted his speed may have reached around 75mph.
