Police have said there is “no evidence” a copy of EL James's new Fifty Shades of Grey novel was stolen before its release.

Lawyers acting for publisher Penguin Random House told the press last week that a copy of new book Grey had been stolen, and warned against purchasing or printing the unlawfully obtained text, which is due for release on Thursday.

A crime report was made to Kent Police that some packaging was found to be damaged and a copy of the novel missing.

However, the force today said there was no evidence of any crime being committed, though it declined to elaborate further.

A spokesman said: "There is no evidence at this stage to suggest that an offence has been committed.

"No more action will be taken unless further information is received."

The publisher denied any suggestion that the alleged theft was a publicity stunt, with a spokeswoman telling the Standard it was "categorically and absolutely not".

In a written statement, Penguin Random House said: "We are delighted that the book’s theft does not appear to have been for any malicious intent or financial gain.

"We can however confirm that we will continue our investigations into this matter and that we will be reporting any findings to Kent police.

"We’re hugely excited to be publishing Grey by EL James tomorrow."

The novel is described as a retelling of the original book from the perspective of central character Christian Grey.
