OAP receives medal - 66 years late

12 April 2012

A pensioner will finally receive her Second World War Medal - 66 years after she first risked her life for Britain.

Edna Peckham, 85, will belatedly accept the medal from Minister for Veterans Kevan Jones, at Imjin Barracks, Gloucester.

Mrs Peckham, from Cirencester, volunteered for the Auxiliary Territorial Service - the women's branch of the army - at the age of 19.

She supported men firing anti-aircraft guns at German planes at battery stations in the North of England, often with bombs falling around her.

The widow has two sons, five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren and hopes the medal will help them understand her role in the war.

On one occasion she was confronted by the sight of a stricken enemy plane hurtling to the ground, with its guns still blazing.

She told the Gloucestershire Echo: "We didn't actually man the guns, but we were in a very dangerous situation. I could hear the bombs coming - it was terrible. It was a precarious job, and now I think about it, I don't know how I did it."

Three others will receive honours at the base including Sheila Appleton, from Gloucester who is accepting the War Medal, Defence Medal, 39-45 Star, Italy Star and Africa Star with North Africa Clasp on behalf of her late father, Ralph Henry Hopper.

Jeanette Baston, from Kidderminster, Worcestershire, will be presented with the GSM Canal Zone Medal on behalf of her late husband, LAC Richard Baston RAF.

Peter Monk from Swindon will be presented with his HM Armed Forces Veterans Badge.
