Pensioner winched to safety by crane after his mobility scooter veered 20ft off pier into river

A 93-year-old man was today being treated in hospital after apparently driving his mobility scooter 20 feet off a pier into a river.

Police said the man became stuck in around six feet of mud after the incident in Truro, Cornwall.

He was rescued by emergency crews after they were called to the scene at around 10.53 this morning.

A Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service spokeswoman said: "Firefighters were called to the aid of a man who had fallen into the Truro River while travelling on his mobility scooter along Garras Wharf in Truro.

"The 93 year-old fell about 15 to 20ft into the river while the tide was out and landed on soft mud.

"Firefighters rescued the gentleman and passed him into the care of the ambulance service who took him to hospital."

A Devon and Cornwall Police spokeswoman said: "We were called to reports of a man aged in his 90s stuck in the mud in Truro.

"It appears his mobility scooter veered off a pier into the river when the tide was low."

He was later taken to hospital with injuries that are not believed to be life-threatening.

The incident is believed to have been an accident.

A witness told the local Pirate FM website: "The person was lifted out by the crane successfully. Luckily it's low tide."
