Prince Philip celebrated his 92nd birthday in hospital today as he continues to recover from abdominal surgery.

Several gifts arrived from wellwishers during the morning. One delivery man brought roses, fruit and balloons with the messages “Keep calm birthday boy” and “Feel better”.

A two-gun salute to mark the milestone was fired in the capital — the first at Green Park at noon by the King’s Troop Royal Horse Artillery and another at the Tower of London at 1pm by the Honourable Artillery Company. David Cameron tweeted: “Wishing the Duke of Edinburgh a very happy 92nd birthday as he recovers in hospital today.”

The Queen’s physician, Professor John Cunningham, spent 30 minutes with the Duke at the London Clinic in Harley Street. Shortly afterwards, a detective left the hospital and made a sleeping gesture to the media pack outside. The Duke made it clear he wanted the “minimum of fuss” and that he did not want a stream of visitors to avoid increased security.
