The Queen will interrupt her holiday to say farewell to Boris Johnson and for the new prime minister to have an audience with her, Buckingham Palace have confirmed.

The palace have not said when or where the audiences will take place.

The Queen is expected to move from Windsor to Balmoral Castle, Scotland where a formal welcome will take place privately.

She usually stays in Scotland for two months, returning to England in October.

A Buckingham Palace spokesperson said: “Her Majesty will be moving into Balmoral Castle tomorrow.

“The Guard Inspection that usually marks this move, and acts as a formal welcome for HM, will take place. However, it will take place privately inside the Castle grounds, and not outside the gates as in previous years.

“This is a change in line with events being adapted for Her Majesty’s comfort.

“Other than this change it is planned for Balmoral to be very much a business as usual.

“The current plan is for HM to interrupt the stay for the Audience with the outgoing and incoming Prime Minister.

“But we will confirm that and a venue for meetings nearer the time,” the spokesperson said.
