A funeral has been held for Britain’s third richest man the Duke of Westminster, his family have said.

Gerald Cavendish Grosvenor died aged 64 at the Royal Preston Hospital on Tuesday after falling ill at his Abbeystead Estate in Lancashire.

He is believed to have had a heart attack.

A “quiet” funeral for the Duke, who was worth around £8.3 billion, was held today.

In a statement, his family said: “A quiet private funeral service, attended only by close family members, was held this afternoon for the Duke of Westminster who died on Tuesday."

No more details of the service - including its location - were released but it said a memorial service would be held later this year.

It is understood that no members of the royal family attended the service, despite many being close friends of the Grosvenor family.

Who is the new Duke of Westminster?

His multi-billion pound fortune and huge estate, including 190 acres in Belgravia, has been passed down to his 25-year-old son and Prince George’s Godfather Hugh Grosvenor.

The billionaire landowner’s eldest daughters Lady Tamara, 36, and Lady Edwina, 34, missed out on the dukedom because they are female – due to the rule of primogeniture.
