A six-year-old boy who was rescued from a car which plunged into a river has been discharged from hospital, police said.

Ryan Grady and his five-year-old sister, Gabrielle, were airlifted to Birmingham Children's Hospital on Thursday after the vehicle, a silver Vauxhall Vectra estate, entered the River Avon from a field at Boat Lane in Evesham, Worcestershire.

Both children were critically ill when admitted to hospital and Gabrielle, who was trapped in the submerged car for almost two hours, died at around 1.30pm on Sunday.

Police said Ryan was "recovering quite well" and was discharged.

The children's father, Chris Grady, 41, appeared before magistrates in Worcester on Saturday, charged with two counts of attempted murder. Detectives said Gabrielle's death meant the incident was now being treated as a murder investigation.

A spokesman for South Worcestershire Police said: "Our thoughts remain with the family at this difficult time and we would again emphasise that they have asked the media to respect their privacy at all times."

Worcestershire Coroner Geraint Williams has been informed of Gabrielle's death and a post-mortem examination is expected to take place in Birmingham on Wednesday.

Grady will appear at Worcester Crown Court on Thursday.
