Six Britons hurt in hotel bomb

12 April 2012

Six British citizens, including a child, have been injured in a deadly truck bombing in the Pakistan capital Islamabad, the Foreign Office said.

Two of the wounded Britons remain in hospital for observation but the four others have all since been discharged with superficial injuries.

Three of the wounded worked for the British High Commission in the capital.

The British Embassy in the city, one of the largest in the world and employing 150 UK workers, is functioning as normal.

The death toll from the blast has reached 53, including the Czech ambassador, and rescue workers reported more than 250 injured.

Foreign Secretary David Miliband said the bombing will only reinforce Britain's determination to combat terrorism in the country.

Mr Miliband said: "This latest bombing attack in Islamabad is yet another shocking and disgraceful attack without justification. Such an indiscriminate and brutal act of terror deserves the condemnation of the entire international community.

"We continue to stand shoulder to shoulder with the government of Pakistan against the violent extremists who have no answers but only offer death and mayhem. This horrific attack reinforces our shared determination to tackle violent extremism."

Prime Minister Gordon Brown joined the condemnation and said the attack underlined the need to step up anti-terror co-operation.

"We already work with the Pakistan government in giving help with counter-terrorism operations; we will continue to do that," he told Sky News. "But as I was saying to the president of Pakistan a few days ago, we are going to have to step up the co-operation between our two countries, and with other countries, so that we can deal with this terrorist threat."
