The mystery of who killed Archie Mitchell was finally solved as Stacey Slater was revealed to be his murderer.

Actress Lacey Turner was told just 30 minutes before the special live episode of EastEnders, broadcast to mark the soap's 25th anniversary, that she was the killer.

Archie was bludgeoned with a bust of Queen Victoria in the Albert Square pub after alienating many of the residents.

He raped Stacey while she was struggling to control her bipolar disorder, and she finally admitted killing him in the closing minutes of the episode.

Her confession came just after new husband Bradley fell off the roof of a building as he was chased by police.

Tension built throughout the programme with characters pointing the finger at one another.

Phil Mitchell ransacked Ian's house looking for evidence, Janine confronted Peggy and Archie's daughter Roxy accused her sister Ronnie, who revealed she was sexually abused by their father.

The live broadcast apparently went smoothly, apart from Scott Maslen, who plays Jack Branning, stumbling over some lines in his opening scene.
