The man arrested in Germany in connection with the murder of Meredith Kercher can identify who killed the British exchange student, his lawyers said.
Legal representatives acting for Rudy Hermann Guede, currently awaiting extradition to Italy, also said that Miss Kercher's last words would "be at the heart of the defence case".
Guede, 20, denies sexually assaulting and murdering Miss Kercher at her house in Perugia on the night of November 1.
Two other people, Italian Raffaele Sollecito, 23, and Miss Kercher's American housemate Amanda Knox, 20, are also being held in connection with the killing.
It has been widely reported in the Italian media that Guede heard Miss Kercher's last words - said to be the initials A.F - and that he wrote them on the wall of her bedroom.
Walter Biscotti, who travelled to Germany to meet with Guede, said: "That is a very delicate matter. I don't think the details of what was said are exact. It was something a little different. But I want you to understand - Rudy hearing what were possibly Meredith's final words will be the heart, the centre of our defence case."
He added: "I spent hours talking to him. He told me his side of the story, which is practically the same as has been reported. He is determined to return to Italy as soon as possible to proclaim his innocence and demonstrate that he had nothing to do with the crime."
Guede admits he was in the house on the night of the murder but says it was an Italian man he does not know who committed the crime. He says he was in the bathroom when he heard Miss Kercher scream and that he tried, unsuccessfully, to resuscitate her after having a brief confrontation with the man.
Reports in Italy suggested the man said to Guede, "Black man found, black man condemned" before fleeing the house.
Mr Biscotti said: "The reason Rudy says the man is Italian is because he heard him say a few things before he left. Things that are similar to what has appeared in the newspapers. I don't know the exact words, but they were laying the blame on him because he is black."
