A London teenager has been charged with murder after a nurse died days after suffering severe burns in an acid attack.

Xeneral Webster, aged 18, from Hammersmith, has been charged with the murder of 47-year-old Joanna Rand, who died in hospital after suffering burns.

Ms Rand was admitted to Stoke Mandeville Hospital to be treated for her injuries after the attack on June 3, but sadly died 11 days later.

The nurse was sitting on a bench when she became caught up in a fight between three men. One of them kicked a bottle and she was sprayed with a corrosive substance, it was reported.

Webster was remanded in custody following an appearance at Amersham Court on Thursday and is due to appear at Reading Crown Court on 9 April.

The teenager also faces other charges related to the June 3 offence. These include; attempted grievous bodily harm, possession of an offensive weapon, robbery and causing grievous bodily harm.

Ms Rand’s family released a tribute to the mother of three on Friday. They said in a statement: “Jo will be fondly remembered as a fun-loving, bubbly and caring person. She meant so much to so many and her tragic and sudden death has left everyone who knew her shocked and deeply saddened.”

The family said that Ms Rand was known for her "witty sense of humour" and that her favourite saying was "crack on".

A Just Giving page has been set up to raise money for her funeral and burial.
