Tesco has divided shoppers with the creation of a scotch egg pastry, in what must be one of the most indulgent snacks every dreamt up.

The bizarre concept for a new pastry sparked a wave of reaction online after the supermarket shared a picture on its Twitter feed.

The supermarket tweeted: "Fed up of eating pasties and scotch eggs separately? Do you dream of a better way? We do."

Some food lovers appeared at excited at the prospect of purchasing a scotch egg pastry in store and were seemingly disappointed when it was revealed the creation was only being promoted as part of Tesco's online recipes.

Tom Robbins said: "This is just.... wow. Could food get any better?"

Phil Peacock said: "This is literally my idea of a perfect lunch #scotcheggpasty."

Penny Davies tweeted: "Combining two of my least favourite foods".

Others suggested that Tesco was "playing God" by creating the pastry.

One person wrote: "You're playing with powerful forces here. Are you sure you know what you're doing?"

Another tweeted: "My god what have you done.."

And one Twitter user said: "YOU'RE PLAYING GOD".

Meanwhile others felt the calorific snack was a step too far in the world of culinary inventions.

Huw Pritchard said: "This is an abomination. Go and think about what you've done".

Benjamin Williams tweeted: "Who eats pasties and scotch eggs in one meal and thinks that they'd be better off combined anyway? #freaks that's who."
