Two Britons killed on Hajj pilgrimage

12 April 2012

Two Britons were among three people killed when a coach carrying Hajj pilgrims crashed in Saudi Arabia, said the Foreign Office.

A further 34 people were injured, with 28 still in hospital - some in a serious condition. The crash happened as the coach was taking the pilgrims from Medina to Mecca.

The Foreign Office said British pilgrims were among those in hospital, but could not confirm how many Britons were among the casualties. The nationality of the third fatality could not be confirmed.

Gerard Russell, the British Consul-General in Saudi Arabia, said he had been visiting the injured, including two young boys whom he said were not seriously hurt. The victims came from across England, he said, with pilgrims from London and Bolton among the injured.

Mr Russell said there was no indication of terrorism and said it was a "very sad" accident.

"There's certainly no suggestion of any kind of foul play or anything deliberate about it," he said.

He said the names of the victims were known and next-of-kin had been informed. He said: "There is no need for any other people to worry that they may have had relatives who were killed in the crash.

"Some of the injured are serious, most injuries are relatively minor, but obviously everybody is in a lot of shock."

More than two million pilgrims from around the world take part in the Hajj each year. The pilgrimage is one of the five pillars of Islam and is compulsory for every Muslim to perform once in their lifetime.

Pilgrims are already arriving in Saudi Arabia for this year's Hajj, which takes place between December 29 and January 3. Last year more than 300 people, including three Britons, were killed in a stampede during the symbolic stoning ritual.
