Two charged with honeymoon murders

12 April 2012

A man and a teenager from Antigua have been charged with the murders of a British couple on their honeymoon, officials in the Caribbean island said.

Kaniel Martin, 20, and Avie Howell, 17, appeared before a judge in the capital, St John's, on charges of murder, robbery and receiving stolen property. They were ordered to be held without bail.

Neither suspect entered a plea to the charges, though the lawyer for Martin later said he would plead not guilty. "All I will say is that my client maintains his innocence," Ralph Francis said.

Howell's lawyer did not return phone calls seeking comment.

Ben and Catherine Mullany, both 31, were married on July 12 and went to Antigua for a two-week honeymoon. The newly-weds, from Pontardawe in the Swansea Valley were shot in their cottage at the Cocos Hotel and Resort on July 27 on the last day of their honeymoon.

Police said robbery appeared to be a motive.

The murders brought unwelcome negative publicity to Antigua and Barbuda, which is economically dependent on tourism. Authorities brought in officers from Scotland Yard to assist the investigation.

Police in Wales said they had informed the families of the murdered couple of the latest developments.

Last week, authorities charged two women with theft "connected to the murders".

Police detained eight other people. Five were released, and three remained in custody - the two men who have been charged, and a 31-year-old woman who has not been charged.
