Two held over street stab death

12 April 2012

Two men were being questioned by detectives after a man was stabbed to death in a residential street.

The victim, in his 40s, suffered a number of knife wounds to the head and chest during an altercation in Bristol on Saturday night.

Police found the man covered in blood after being called to Gatehouse Avenue in the Withywood area of the city at around 9pm.

He was rushed to Frenchay Hospital in a critical condition where doctors fought to save him, but he died on Sunday morning.

Police launched a murder investigation and arrested one man, in his 50s on Sunday morning.

The second man, in his 30s, was detained by officers in the afternoon.

They are both in custody being interviewed by detectives on suspicion of murder.

A spokesman for Avon and Somerset Police, who appealed for witnesses, said the stabbing was not a random attack and was being treated as a "domestic type" incident.

He added: "We believe there were a number of people in the Gatehouse Avenue area at the time of the incident who may have useful information to help our enquiries."

Part of the road, which is in a 1950s built council estate, was sealed off while a forensic examination was carried out.
