A university cleaner said he feels like a "trillionaire" after students raised more than £1,500 to send him and his wife on holiday to Jamaica.

Some 230 students from the University of Bristol crowdfunded the week-long trip for Herman Gordon and his wife Denise, so he could visit his family for the first time in a decade.

The fundraiser meant he and his wife were able to stay at the Sandals resort in Montego Bay, where they celebrated their 23rd wedding anniversary.

The couple plan to continue their holiday visiting family in Kingston.

Mr Gordon said: "God bless you all. Everybody will see this and think that I'm a trillionaire."

Mrs Gordon added: “I just wanted to say thank you to all the University of Bristol students for this gift that they have given to me and Herman."

The cleaner, who has worked at the university for 12 years, came to the UK from Kingston, Jamaica, as part of the Windrush generation.

He is described as the "epitome of happiness" by students.

The crowdfunding page was set up after students began posting about Mr Gordon on the Bristruths Facebook page.

The target was reached a week.

In a post on the Facebook page on Tuesday, an administrator wrote: "We're delighted to say that Herman loved his holiday at a five star resort in Jamaica along with his wife Denise.

"Bristruths would like to thank all the Bristol students who made this possible."
