The new world memory champion made his way through a recital of the Newsnight credits last night as Jeremy Paxman showed uncharacteristic patience to help him along.

Jonas Von Essen came out on top when the best memories from around the world descended on Croydon yesterday for the world championships.

He triumphed after excelling at memorising playing cards and historical dates in the south London borough.
