A wild bear was shot dead by police after it smashed its way into a shopping centre in Russia.

The animal, which was believed to be between two and three years old, was captured on CCTV running around a mall in the city of Khabarovsk, near the Chinese border.

A worker said she was sitting at her cashier desk when she heard doors breaking and assumed it was a scuffle before a bear galloped past her.

She added: “I was scared, I flattened myself against the chair.

"He ran away and we escaped to the back office."

The bear is seen smashing a window to get into the centre and a short time later, uses its strength to push open two doors to let itself out.

No injuries were reported.

Police were called while the bear was still inside the shopping centre and officers followed it to a nearby playground.

The video, released on YouTube by MestoproTV, shows officers wearing a camouflage uniform shooting at the bear before it is killed.

The Investigative Committee, Russia’ main state investigative agency, have launched an investigation into the legitimacy of the police action.
