Internet sensation Grumpy Cat has died, her owners have announced.

A statement released on Friday said the world-famous cat passed away on on Tuesday aged 7.

The post said: “Despite care from top professionals, as well as from her very loving family, Grumpy encountered complications from a recent urinary tract infection that unfortunately became too tough for her to overcome."

Grumpy Cat, who has more than two million followers on Instagram, rose to fame after a photograph of her was posted to Reddit in September 2012.

Her unique look, which was caused by an underbite and feline dwarfism, caused her to become famous and garnered her a legion of fans online.

She has since inspired thousands of memes, made TV appearances and starred in commercials as the face of Honey Nut Cheerios, and Friskies cat food in the US.

Fans have taken to Twitter with tributes to the much-loved, whose real name was Tardar Sauce, and have been resharing photos and memes of her unimpressed face ever since.

One fan shared an image online of Grumpy Cat photoshopped on the front of Elliott's bike in E.T.

This Grumpy Cat meme is us all.

Too true, Grumpy cat.

RIP Grumpy cat.
