TV anchor accused of cheating on girlfriend after half-naked 'lover' appears on webcam during news report

Many of us have become used to witnessing webcam slip-ups since Zoom replaced work meetings during lockdown.

Usually the hiccup is followed by a burst of laughter and a red face, and brushed aside.

Not for one Spanish TV anchor, whose video-chat blunder might have cost him his relationship.

Alfono Merlos, 41, was presenting a news report on the Estado de Alarma channel when a half-naked woman appeared in the background.

Observant viewers quickly noticed that the woman, who appeared to only be wearing a bra, was not his famed girlfriend Marta López, but instead 27-year-old journalist Alexia Rivas.

The clip soon went viral online and Mr Merlos was accused of cheating.

After several days of silence, the journalist finally broke his cover to appear on The Ana Rose Show on Monday and claim he was in fact single at the time.

Ms Rivas told Socialité: “I didn’t get into a relationship, he told me he was single. We have been [seeing each other] three weeks.”

But Ms López has hit back claiming she had actually not broken up with Mr Merlos at the time of the footage, but instead they were having a four-day break after an argument.

The reality star called the incident “shameful” and “unpleasant” and said she had been in lockdown with the host since March 12, when Spain brought in strict stay-at-home orders.

She added: “I had been mad at Alfonso for four days. He didn’t want me to do something that affected my family. I did it, and he got mad. We argue.”

Whoever is telling the truth, the scandal left only one of the three protagonists making a grovelling apology.

“If you think that my attitude has not been correct or that there are things that I have not done well, I have no problem asking for forgiveness, although my goal was not to harm someone else,” Mr Lopez said.
