Donald Trump’s campaign manager Corey Lewandowski is to leave his job, it was announced today.
A campaign spokeswoman confirmed Mr Trump had parted ways with his controversial strategist in a statement.
The exact reason behind his departure has yet to emerge.
A spokeswoman for Mr Trump described it as a “parting of the ways” but a sources close to the business tycoon told the New York Times, on condition of anonymity, Mr Lewandowski had been fired.
They said Mr Lewandowski, 42, had been axed from the campaign largely because of his poor relationship with the Republican National Committee and GOP officials.
In March, he hit the headlines when he was accused of grabbing a female reporter at a campaign event.
Police in Florida charged the 42-year-old with intentionally grabbing and bruising the arm of Breitbart reporter Michelle Fields on March 8 when she tried to question Mr Trump.
However, prosecutors in Florida declined to pursue the charges.
Mr Trump’s press secretary Hope Hicks said in a statement: “The Donald J. Trump Campaign for President, which has set a historic record in the Republican Primary having received almost 14 million votes, has today announced that Corey Lewandowski will no longer be working with the campaign.
“The campaign is grateful to Corey for his hard work and dedication and we wish him the best in the future.”
The New York Times reported the campaign is planning adjustments ahead of the general election.
Mr Trump is most likely to contest the presidential election with Hillary Clinton, who claimed victory in the Democratic race earlier this month.
