A 61-year-old has said he is grateful to be alive after the car he was driving was crushed when it slid under a lorry in the US.

Fire officials say they are amazed Ricki Artruc was not seriously hurt after the car he was driving in Uxbridge, Massachusetts, hit a piece of concrete in the road and became airborne.

The brakes didn't work and the car crossed a grassy area onto a highway ramp, where it became wedged under the tractor-trailer.

The car was then dragged "a good distance" on Route 146 and the roof was crushed.

A spokesman for Uxbridge Fire Department said Mr Artruc climbed out of the driver's side door.

The 61-year-old driver, of Southbridge, told NBC Boston he's "just glad to be alive".

He added: “When I hit [the piece of concrete], it just launched the car in the air. I did a Dukes of Hazzard.

“I could see I was coming to the tractor-trailer and I knew I couldn’t stop. I had no brakes, nothing, I knew I was going to hit it.”

Uxbridge Fire Department said Mr Artruc was taken to hospital and is recovering from minor injuries.
