A French MP has demanded the UK pays towards the costs of cleaning up the streets in Marseille after trouble involving “unacceptable” football supporters.

Socialist deputy Patrick Mennucci was quoted on French news website La Provence as saying: “What has happened with the English fans is unbearable and extremely shocking.

"The people of Marseille have really despaired about this unacceptable behaviour."

It comes after further clashes involving England fans as they fought battles with Russian supporters in the Old Port area on Saturday.

The comments were made by the politician despite claims the violence was sparked by Russian hooligans.

Mr Mennucci, 61, reportedly said the police chief has "done what he can" and that alcohol could have been banned in the Old Port area.

He was particularly angry that "no British officials, either the ambassador in Paris or his general consul in Marseille, has offered an apology to the population, or come to the area to calm down their citizens".

He added: “I hope at least that when the bill for the damage has been completed, their country will contribute to the cost because it should not be the people of Marseille who have to put their hand in their pocket."

England fans were involved in bloody clashes on Saturday for the third day running, hours before the team is due to open their Euro 2016 campaign against Russia.
