People are spending less time on Facebook since the site overhauled its news feed function.

The social media giant has revealed that changes to its online algorithm contributed to a quarterly decline in users in the US and Canada.

The BBC reports founder Mark Zuckerberg called 2017 "a strong year...but...also a hard one" as the firm released its latest results.

The site is now prioritising posts from friends and family in an attempt to boost interactions between users.

Mr Zuckerberg revealed the new strategy, which includes measures such as showing fewer viral videos, had reduced time spent on Facebook by around 5 per cent (50 million hours a day).

Facebook's revenue rose by 47 per cent last year to more than £28.2 billion ($40 billion) while profits reached nearly £11.3 billion ($16 billion).

The news comes amid an international investigation into the site's role in both the 2016 US Presidential Election and the Brexit vote.

Facebook recently told the parliamentary fake news inquiry it will expand its investigation into whether Russian agents attempted to influence the Brexit vote.

Executives from Facebook, Twitter and Google are due to give evidence to the parliamentary inquiry into fake news later this month.
