The first two bodies from the AirAsia Flight QZ8501 crash have returned to the city of Surabaya in Indonesia.

Seven bodies including a flight attendant in her red AirAsia uniform have been recovered, according to authorities.

The Airbus A320-200, which was carrying 162 people from Surabaya to Singapore, went missing on Sunday and debris from the flight were discovered in the sea on Tuesday.

Authorities said the hunt for the rest of the bodies has been hampered by bad weather.

The two victims were a woman and a boy. The other five bodies - three male and two female - will remain on a warship until the weather clears.

Sonar images also identified what appeared to be large parts of the plane, but strong currents have been moving the debris.

A memorial service is being held in Surabaya on Wednesday evening. A number of Indonesian cities, including Surabaya, have opted to cancel or tone down their planned New Year's Eve celebrations.

Minister of Home Affairs Tjahjo Kumolo said: "We are in mourning over the AirAsia disaster that claimed the lives of many Indonesians.

"We need to show our sense of sympathy by restraining from holding excessive partying."

The airliner's disappearance halfway through the two hour flight triggered an international search involving dozens of planes, ships and helicopters from numerous countries.

It is still unclear what brought the plane down.
