A new underwater high speed rail route has been given the green light by Beijing.

The tunnel will connect Ningbo, a port city south of Shanghai, to Zhoushan, an archipelago off the east coast.

Trains travelling along the line will be able to reach speeds of 155mph.

It is hoped the 47.84 mile Yong-Zhou Railway plan will boost tourism and create a two-hour commute zone within the Zhejiang Province.

The route will connect to the existing high-speed rail network that spans China and significantly shorten the journey, which now takes around 4.5 hours.

The proposed plan suggests there will be a 10 mile undersea section and 44 miles of track will be newly built.

But, it does not come cheap, with a price tag of RMB 25.2 billion (£2.84 billion).

Work is expected to begin next year and is due for completion in 2025.
