A nine-year-old girl was today recovering in hospital after skiing into a chalet in the Austrian Alps.

India Furness crashed through the window of the building and hit the opposite wall inside.

She was airlifted to hospital in Innsbruck in a coma and later regained consciousness. Her injuries were said to be severe but not life-threatening.

India lost control on an icy “black run” on the country’s highest mountain, the Grossglockner, and crashed through a safety net and a wooden fence.

From Cerne Abbas in Dorset, she was on holiday with her parents Nigel, 50, a landscape designer, and mother Helen, 45, a caterer, and two older sisters. Her family were with her when the accident happened.

Dr Wolfgang Kratzer, who treated her in the helicopter, said: “She was going way too fast. She must have flown through the window like a rocket.”
