Tributes have been made to actress Erin Moran, best known for playing Joanie in US sitcom Happy Days, who has died aged 56.

Police in America said the former star was found unresponsive at an address in Indiana on Saturday afternoon.

The cause of her death is not yet known.

Her fellow co-stars have taken to social media to pay tribute to Ms Moran, who played Joanie Cunningham, the younger sister of lead character Richie in Happy Days.

Mr Moran joined the sitcom aged just 13 in 1974, having acted on TV before she was 10 years old.

Director Ron Howard tweeted: “Such sad news. Rip Erin. I’ll always choose to remember you on our show making scene better, getting laughs and lighting up TV screens.”

Henry Winkler, who played the Fonz in the 70s sitcom, said: “OH Erin... now you will finally have the peace you wanted so badly here on earth ... rest in it serenely now.. too soon.”

After Happy Days, Ms Moran went on to take on roles in The Love Boat and Murder, She Wrote, but was plagued by personal and financial troubles.

She was at times reportedly homeless.
