Two stuntmen have drowned after they jumped from a helicopter into a reservoir while shooting a film in southern India.

The film crew was shooting the final scenes of a regional Kannada language film when the men made their leap as part of an action sequence.

Police said that Raghav Uday and Anil Verma were not wearing life jackets when they performed the stunt.

The pair, who could not swim, were not rescued in time to save their lives.

One of Kannada cinema's top actors, Duniya Vijay, also jumped into the water with the stuntmen, but managed to swim and was later rescued by a fisherman.

Police now say they could bring negligence charges against the production company if they find that safety procedures were inadequate.

Kannada language is spoken in the southern Indian state of Karnataka, which has a thriving film industry.
