An Indonesian man who claimed to be 146 years old and the world’s oldest person has died.

The man known as Mbah Ghoto, grandpa Ghoto, claimed to have documents stating he was born in December 1870.

Earlier this month, he was taken to hospital because of his ailing health and has since died in his village in Central Java.

Mbah Ghoto made headlines last year for claiming to be the world’s oldest living person, though Indonesia did not begin recording births until 1900.

But officials in his home town of Sragen claimed they were able to verify his age based on the documents and interviews he gave.

His grandson Suyanto told the BBC: “Since he came back from the hospital, he only ate spoonfuls of porridge and drank very little.

“It only lasted a couple of days. From that moment on to his death, he refused to eat and drink."

Mbah Ghoto, also known as Sodimedjo, was a lifelong heavy smoker and outlived all 10 of his siblings, his four wives and children.

His grandson said he was buried on Monday morning in a local cemetery spot he purchased several years ago.

He added: “He didn't ask much. Before he died, he just wanted us, his family, to let him go.”

The longest living person in recorded history is French woman Jeanne Calment, who was 122 years old when she died in August 1997.
