Maria’s mother ‘is found in Bulgaria’ after Interpol hunt

Mystery: a picture released by Greek police of the blonde girl found at a Roma camp

The parents of the girl found living with a Roma family in Greece have been found in Bulgaria after an Interpol search, it was claimed today.

They were reportedly detained in Vulkovo, 370 miles from the camp in Larissa where Maria was discovered last week during a police raid.

Roma couple Christos Salis, 39 and Eleftheria Dimopoulou, 40, have denied child abduction and claimed the girl was given to them by her Bulgarian mother because she could not afford to support her. Reports in Greece today said Maria’s mother is understood to have nine other children and told police she sold her “because we were hungry ... we just could not feed or take care of it”.

DNA tests are now being carried out to determine if the woman is the girl’s mother.
