Tributes have poured in to American soul singer Sharon Jones who has died aged 60.

Music producer Mark Ronson and songwriter John Legend paid homage to the big-voiced singer, who performed with band the Dap-Kings.

Ms Jones, who was credited with bringing in a revival of soul music when she rose to stardom, was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2013.

She died in a New York hospital on Friday surrounded by loved-ones and her fellow band members.

Her representative, Judy Miller Silverman, said: “Thank you for your prayers and thoughts during this difficult time."

British producer Mr Ronson, who brought the Dap-Kings in to play backing band to Amy Winehouse on her breakthrough album, "Back to Black," said, "Sharon Jones had one of the most magnificent, gut-wrenching voices of anyone in recent time."

Musician Booker T. Jones, of Booker T and the MGs, said: “RIP Sharon Jones - I was honored to have her sing a song on my album... Honored to perform in Brooklyn with her. Condolences to Dap Kings.”

Grammy-nominated Ms Jones grew up singing gospel at her church before singing in a wedding band and as a back-up session artist. She released her first record age 40 and first album with the Dap Kings when she was 46.

Their sixth album, "Give the People What They Want" earned Jones her first Grammy nomination for best R&B album. Their last album, "It's a Holiday Soul Party," was released last year.
